Resume Writing Tips
-
Be
sure to include your name, address and phone number on your resume! You want to make sure potential
employers can contact you.
-
While
there is no standard format, the following headings are important: objective,
experience/work history, and education.
-
Do
not include personal information, such as height/weight, family information, or
hobbies. Your measurements and
marital status are irrelevant to the position (in fact, employers cannot use
these criteria when selecting candidates). You may be asked how you spend your free time in your
interview, but it’s not necessary to include that information on the resume.
- Your
references go on a separate sheet.
If included on your resume, they take up precious space that you could
be using to sell yourself. An
employer will let you know when they want your references; you are usually
asked for them at the interview stage.
-
Keep
your resume at one page, unless you have an extraordinary amount of relevant
experience or accomplishments to include.
You don’t want to take the chance that the person reviewing your resume
will ignore all of the information on the additional pages because they don’t
want to turn the page.
-
Research
the company(ies) you are interested in.
You may be able to tailor your resume to their needs.
-
Focus
on your achievements! Emphasize
the positive.
-
Be
careful to never include false or misleading information on your resume. You could lose your (new) job over it!
-
Spelling
counts! Many a candidate has been disqualified because of sloppy typographical
errors. Make sure you use words
you understand – you don’t want to feel foolish in an interview when
you’re asked a question off of your resume and you have no idea what the
interviewer is talking about!
-
Read
your resume over and then read it again.
-
Clear
copies of your resume are important.
Be sure to use a high-grade paper when you have the resume printed.
